DIY Fiberglass Pool Repair: What You Can Fix, and What You Really Can't
Some fiberglass pool repairs are genuinely DIY-able, and we'll show you which ones. Others look DIY-able and aren't, and a botched patch usually costs more to fix than the original problem. Here's the honest line between the two, drawn by the people who repair both.
A capable homeowner can DIY exactly one category of fiberglass pool repair well: minor cosmetic gel coat damage above the waterline, fixed with a color-matched gel coat repair kit. Anything structural, anything underwater, anything involving blisters or leaks, and anything that requires draining the pool belongs to a professional, not because pros are precious about it, but because the failure modes are expensive and one of them can destroy the pool.
What You Genuinely Can DIY
Minor gel coat scratches and chips above the waterline
A scratch or small chip on a step edge or above the waterline, shallow, cosmetic, dry, and reachable without draining, is a fair DIY project. Here's what it realistically involves, because the kit instructions undersell it:
- Buy a gel coat repair kit (paste gel coat with catalyst), ideally color-matched by your pool's manufacturer. Expect the match to be close, not perfect, factory colors fade in service, so fresh gel coat next to 10-year-old gel coat will show.
- Prep matters more than product. The area must be bone dry, sanded to clean laminate, and free of wax and oils. Rushing prep is why most DIY patches lift.
- Mix small, work fast. Catalyzed gel coat has a short working window. Overfill the chip slightly, cover with plastic film so it cures fully (gel coat stays tacky exposed to air), and let it cure hard.
- Sand and polish in stages, wet-sand progressively finer, then buff. This is the step that turns a visible blob into an acceptable patch, and it takes longer than the repair itself.
Done patiently, this is a satisfying fix that protects the laminate. Expect "good from six feet away," not invisible, and that's a fine outcome for a step chip.

What You Can't DIY, and Why
Structural cracks
A crack that goes through the gel coat into the laminate isn't a "fill it and forget it" repair. Proper crack repair means grinding the crack out entirely, laminating new fiberglass in overlapping layers, and re-coating. A crack merely filled with putty or gel coat paste will telegraph back through, the shell flexes, the filler doesn't, usually within a season, now with water intrusion into the laminate underneath.
Blisters
Osmotic blisters mean water is already inside the laminate. Popping and patching them traps the moisture, and it will simply blister the patch. Full resurfacing
Spraying gel coat across an entire pool is a fabrication trade: surface profiling, catalyst ratios, film thickness, temperature windows, and spray technique. There's no consumer-grade path to it, the DIY version of "resurface the pool" is epoxy paint, and we've written an entire page on why that's a trap.

The Draining Risk, Explained Plainly
A fiberglass shell is strong the way an egg is strong: brilliant under balanced load, vulnerable when the load is removed. The water inside your pool presses outward against groundwater and backfill pressing in. Drain it, and that balance disappears.
- Floating: with enough groundwater, an empty shell becomes a boat. Shells can lift partially or completely out of the ground, plumbing torn, decking cracked, shell twisted. This can happen in hours.
