Spider Cracks in a Fiberglass Pool: Causes, Triage, and the Right Repair
Those hairline webs spreading across your steps or walls are stress fractures in the gel coat. Most are cosmetic today, but they mark where the shell is being stressed, and the wrong "fix" makes them permanent. Here's how to read them.
Spider cracks in a fiberglass pool are fine, web-like fractures in the gel coat, the rigid surface layer, caused by stress the more flexible laminate underneath absorbed without breaking. Most spider cracks are cosmetic and don't leak. But they always have a cause, and if that cause is ongoing shell movement, cosmetic today becomes structural tomorrow. The repair that lasts is grinding out the cracked gel coat and refinishing, never smearing sealant over the top.
What Spider Cracks Are and What Causes Them
A fiberglass pool is a sandwich: a thin, hard, glossy gel coat on top of a thicker, slightly flexible structural laminate of glass fiber and resin. When something stresses the shell, the laminate flexes and recovers, but the gel coat is more brittle than the structure behind it. It cracks in the classic radiating spider or web pattern instead of bending. So spider cracks are less a wound and more a stress gauge: they show you exactly where the shell got loaded.
The usual suspects:
- Voids in the backfill. If the material around and under the shell settles or washes out, the pool spans a gap. Every swimmer's step flexes the unsupported panel, and the gel coat webs out. This is the most common cause we find on steps, benches, and floors.
- Point stress and impacts. A dropped tool, a ladder foot without a pad, an object leaned against a wall during construction. One hard load in a small spot cracks the coat in a bullseye pattern.
- Gel coat applied too thick. Where gel coat pooled during manufacturing, often in corners and radiuses, the layer is thicker and even more brittle. Thick spots craze with far less stress. Cracks concentrated in corners often trace back to this.
- Improper installation. A shell set on uneven base material, lifted incorrectly, or backfilled with the wrong material carries built-in stress from day one. These cracks tend to show up early in the pool's life.
- Ground movement and water-table changes. Expansive soils, drought-swell cycles, and shifting groundwater all move the shell in millimeters. The gel coat keeps score.
How to Diagnose Spider Cracks Yourself
Your job isn't to fix the cracks, it's to figure out which kind you have. Run this triage.
Look at the pattern
Fine hairlines radiating from a point, or a shallow web across a step or corner, with the surface still smooth to the touch, that's classic cosmetic crazing confined to the gel coat. A single long crack, a crack you can catch a fingernail in, or one with displaced edges is a different animal: suspect it goes into the laminate.
Map and date them
Take close-up photos with a coin for scale, note the date, and mark crack ends with a grease pencil. Recheck monthly. Cracks that grow, widen, or spawn new webs mean the stress is active, the shell is still moving. Static cracks mean a past event.
Check your water level
Cosmetic gel coat crazing does not leak, the laminate behind it is intact. If spider cracks come with unexplained water loss, do a bucket test. A leaking crack has penetrated the structure and jumps the priority list.
Press around them
With the area underwater or drained, press firmly next to the cracked zone. Flexing, oil-canning, or a hollow tap sound suggests a void behind the shell, the root cause that has to be addressed, not just the cracks it created. A flexing floor or a bulging wall near cracks is a structural flag.
Why Filling Cracks With Sealant Fails
The internet's favorite fix, silicone, epoxy putty, or "pool crack sealer" pressed into the lines, fails for a simple reason: it treats the crack as a gap when the crack is actually a symptom of movement. Sealants don't bond well to slick, waxy, or wet gel coat; they flex at a different rate than the shell; and the underlying stress that made the crack is still there. The patch discolors, peels, and the crack telegraphs right through it, usually within a season or two. Worse, contaminated crack edges make the eventual proper repair harder. Same verdict for painting over cracks: paint bridges nothing, and the web reappears in the new finish.
What Happens If You Ignore Spider Cracks
Truly cosmetic, static crazing can sit for years looking ugly but doing no harm. The risk is that you can't always tell which kind you have, and active cracks compound. Micro-cracks collect dirt and algae, so they darken and spread visually. Cracks over a void grow as the unsupported span keeps flexing, until one day the laminate itself fractures and the pool leaks. And once water gets through the gel coat into the laminate, you've opened the door to delamination and blistering around the crack. Cheap cosmetic problem, meet expensive structural one.

Are spider cracks in a fiberglass pool serious?
Usually not immediately, most are confined to the gel coat and don't leak. But they mark real stress on the shell. Cracks that grow, run long and straight, catch a fingernail, or come with water loss have moved beyond cosmetic and need professional attention.
Do spider cracks mean my pool is leaking?
Not by themselves. Gel coat crazing sits on top of an intact, waterproof laminate. If you're also losing more than evaporation-level water, run a bucket test, a crack that penetrates the laminate can leak, and that changes the diagnosis.
Can I fill spider cracks with epoxy or sealant?
You can, but it won't hold. Sealants bond poorly to gel coat, flex differently than the shell, and don't touch the stress that caused the crack. The web typically reappears within a season or two, through sealant and through paint alike. Lasting repair means grinding the cracks out and refinishing.
