Fiberglass Pool Losing Water: Evaporation or a Leak?
Every pool loses some water to the sun and wind. But if you're topping off constantly, one overnight test tells you whether it's weather or a leak, and on a fiberglass pool, a leak is a problem for the ground around the shell, not just your water bill.
A fiberglass pool losing water is either evaporating or leaking, and the bucket test separates the two in 24 hours: a bucket of pool water sitting on the steps evaporates at the same rate as the pool, so if the pool's level drops faster than the bucket's, you have a leak. Hot, dry, windy weather can honestly evaporate around a quarter inch a day, but leaks on fiberglass pools rarely come from the shell itself. They come from the penetrations: skimmer, returns, lights, main drain, and the plumbing behind them.
Why Fiberglass Pools Lose Water
Three possibilities, in order of likelihood:
- Evaporation. The everyday cause. Rate depends on temperature, humidity, wind, and whether the water is heated, a heated pool on a cool, breezy night steams off water fast. Splash-out and backwashing add to the "mystery" loss.
- A plumbing or fitting leak. The fiberglass shell is one seamless piece, which is a genuine advantage, but every hole cut into it is a joint between fiberglass and something else. Skimmer throats and gaskets, return fittings, light niches and conduit, the main drain, and the underground plumbing runs are where the vast majority of fiberglass pool leaks live.
- A shell breach. Less common, but real: a crack that penetrated the laminate (often evolved from ignored spider cracks), a failed old repair, or damage at a fitting cutout.
How to Diagnose Water Loss Yourself: The Bucket Test
This is the gold-standard DIY leak test. It costs you a bucket and a day.
Set up
Fill the pool to its normal level. Place a bucket on the top step or a bench so its rim sits above the waterline, and fill the bucket with pool water to a few inches from its top. Weight it with a rock or brick so it can't shift or float.
Mark both levels
With tape or a grease pencil, mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool's water level outside it (on the bucket's exterior or on the pool wall/skimmer faceplate). Do this with the pump running normally.
Wait 24 hours
Keep swimmers out and don't add water. Rain cancels the test, start over on a dry day.
Read the result
Both levels dropped the same amount? That's evaporation, the bucket and the pool live in the same weather. Pool dropped noticeably more than the bucket? You have a leak. The difference between the two drops is your actual leak rate.
Run it again, pump off
Repeat the test with the equipment off for 24 hours. Losing more with the pump on points to the pressure side (return plumbing). Losing more with the pump off points to the suction side or a shell/fitting leak. Same loss either way suggests a leak in the structure or a fitting below water level.
Two bonus observations worth logging: where the water level stops dropping (it often stabilizes at the leak's height, level stops right at the light? Look at the light niche), and any soggy, sunken, or unusually lush spots in the yard or deck near the pool.
What Water Loss Does to a Fiberglass Shell Over Time
Here's what makes a leak on a fiberglass pool more serious than the water bill. A fiberglass shell is engineered to be supported, water pushing out from inside, backfill pushing in from outside, in balance. A leak attacks that balance from both sides:
- It erodes the backfill. Leaking water doesn't vanish; it flows into the material packed around the shell, washing fines away and carving channels and voids. The shell starts spanning gaps it was never meant to span.
- Voids create flex, flex creates cracks. Unsupported panels move underfoot, gel coat crazes, and cracks grow, which can open new leak paths. It's a feedback loop.
- Saturated ground pushes back. Water accumulating around the shell raises local groundwater pressure. That's the mechanism behind bulging walls, and in a worst case, an emptied shell in saturated ground can shift or float.
- It undermines everything nearby. Decks settle and crack, plumbing lines strain as soil moves, and the repair scope grows every month the leak runs.
A slow leak is the cheapest structural problem you'll ever get the chance to fix early. It does not stay cheap.
Confirm with the bucket test, then get the leak located precisely before anyone starts cutting or digging.
