Fiberglass pool leak detection starts with one question: is the water loss evaporation or a leak? A simple bucket test answers it in 24 hours. If it's a leak, the source is almost always one of four places, fittings, the skimmer, a crack in the shell, or the light niche, and each one is findable with pressure and dye testing, and permanently fixable with a sealed fiberglass repair and marine gel coat.
Step One: The Bucket Test (Do This Before You Call Anyone)
Every pool loses some water to evaporation, more in hot, dry, windy weather. The bucket test separates normal evaporation from a real leak, costs nothing, and takes five minutes to set up:
- Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on the top step, weighted so it can't tip. The water inside the bucket and the pool water around it should be at similar temperature.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool's level outside the bucket (tape or a grease pencil works).
- Turn off autofill, keep swimmers out, and wait 24 hours. Run one 24-hour test with the pump on, then repeat with it off.
Read the result: both levels drop the same amount, that's evaporation, and your pool is fine. The pool level drops more than the bucket level, you have a leak. And if the loss is worse with the pump running, the leak is likely in the plumbing under pressure; if it's the same with the pump off, suspect the shell or a fitting. Write your numbers down.

Where Fiberglass Pools Actually Leak
Good news first: the fiberglass shell itself is the least likely culprit. A one-piece molded shell has no seams and no plaster to crack. Leaks concentrate where something penetrates the shell or where the laminate has been damaged. Four spots account for nearly every leak we find:
Return and suction fittings
Every fitting is a hole cut in the shell with a sealed connection around it. Those seals age, the shell flexes seasonally, and eventually a fitting weeps. Because the water escapes behind the shell, you'll rarely see evidence, just a slow, steady drop that stops right around fitting depth.
The skimmer
The skimmer throat is the largest penetration in your pool, joining a rigid plastic body to a flexing fiberglass wall. The sealant joint between them is a classic leak point, and it announces itself with water loss that stops just below the skimmer opening.
Cracks in the shell
A structural crack that reaches through the laminate leaks, and it's the most destructive leak of the four, because the escaping water washes out the backfill supporting the shell, which causes more flexing, which grows the crack. The light niche
Pool lights sit in a niche that penetrates the wall, with a conduit running behind it. Both the niche seal and the conduit are known leak paths, and a leak here conveniently stops falling right at the top of the light ring, one of the most useful diagnostic clues there is.
Where the water level stops dropping is where your leak lives. Loss that stops at the skimmer mouth, the light ring, or a fitting depth points straight at that component. Loss that continues toward the floor points to a crack or a main drain. Note the stop level before you call, it shortens the hunt.
How We Pinpoint the Leak: Pressure and Dye Testing
Once the bucket test confirms a leak, we stop guessing and start testing. Diagnosis before treatment, same as any good medicine.
Pressure testing isolates the plumbing. Each line, skimmer, returns, main drain, cleaner line, is plugged and pressurized one at a time. A line that holds pressure is healthy; a line that bleeds down has a leak. This tells us definitively whether your problem is in the pipes or in the pool.
Dye testing pinpoints leaks in the shell and its penetrations. With the water dead calm, a small stream of dye is released beside each suspect, fitting rims, skimmer joint, light niche, any visible crack. Water flowing into a leak pulls the dye with it in a visible thread, you can literally watch the water leave your pool.

The Repair: Sealed, Laminated, and Gel Coated
Finding the leak is half the job. The other half is a repair that doesn't reopen next season, which rules out smearing sealant over the problem and refilling.
- Fittings and skimmer: the failed connection is rebuilt and resealed properly, not caulked over. Where the surrounding laminate has been water-damaged, it's ground back and rebuilt first.
- Cracks: ground out to solid material, re-laminated with new fiberglass and resin, and faired flush, full structural continuity, not a bandage.
- Light niches: the niche seal is restored and the surrounding laminate repaired as needed.
- Every repair gets sealed under marine gel coat.
