7 Pool Winterization Mistakes That Crack Fiberglass Pools
Every April our route crews open the season with the same repair list, and almost every job on it traces back to one of seven closing mistakes made the previous fall. Here's the failure catalog, what goes wrong, and what it looks like by spring.

Mistake 1: Dropping the Water Level Too Far
The most dangerous mistake on the list, because it feels responsible. Owners drop the water a foot, two feet, sometimes drain the shallow end entirely, reasoning that less water means less ice. But in a fiberglass pool, water is structural. It ballasts the shell against groundwater and braces the walls against wet winter soil. Your manufacturer specifies a winter level for a reason, and it's almost always just a few inches below the skimmer, never lower.
What we see in spring: bulged walls where soil pressure pushed in on an unbraced panel, shells that shifted or floated after a wet winter, and spider cracks radiating across the exposed band of gel coat that spent four months flexing through freeze-thaw cycles with no water behind it.
Mistake 2: Not Blowing Out the Lines, or Blowing Them Halfway
Surface ice on a full pool is mostly harmless; it floats and expands upward. The water that actually breaks things is the water trapped in your plumbing. A line that's "mostly" blown out still holds a low spot of water, and when that water freezes it expands with enough force to split PVC, crack fitting rings, and fracture the laminate around a return.
What we see in spring: cracked skimmer throats, split return fittings, and hairline plumbing breaks that announce themselves as a pool mysteriously losing water in May. The plumbing repair is one bill; the saturated backfill it creates behind the shell is often a second one.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Groundwater
Winter is the wet season across most of our sixteen states. Rain and snowmelt raise the water table exactly when your pool is sitting at its lowest level of the year. If your yard drains toward the pool, your deck sheets runoff at the shell, or you've never checked whether the pool has a working hydrostatic relief system, groundwater will spend all winter pressing on the structure from outside.
What we see in spring: heaved plumbing where saturated backfill froze and jacked the pipes, wall movement, and in the worst cases a shell lifted partially out of level, a repair measured in weeks, not days. If you're closing a pool in a low or poorly drained yard, groundwater is the first thing to think about, not an afterthought.
Mistake 4: A Loose Cover, or the Wrong Cover Entirely
A tarp held down by water bags is not a winter cover for a pool that will see snow and ice. Loose covers dump debris loads into the water, sag under snow until they tear, and, the part owners never expect, saw back and forth against the coping edge in every winter wind, grinding at the gel coat along the waterline for months.
What we see in spring: abraded, dull waterline bands where the cover chafed, tannin-stained water full of a winter's worth of leaves, and skimmer faces cracked by debris-laden ice sheets. A properly anchored safety cover costs more once and prevents all three.
Mistake 5: Closing With Unbalanced Water
Whatever chemistry you close with, your gel coat soaks in it until April. Acidic water spends the whole off-season quietly etching the surface. Scale-forming water leaves a mineral crust at the waterline. Low sanitizer lets algae get a months-long head start under the cover. Balance the water about a week before you close, pH 7.2-7.6, alkalinity in range, and confirm it's holding before the cover goes on.
What we see in spring: surfaces that went in glossy and came out chalky and dull, stained waterlines, and the early stages of the etching that lets water start working into the laminate. Left uncorrected for a few seasons, that's how osmotic blisters get their start.
Mistake 6: Closing Too Early in Warm Weather
Closing on Labor Day because summer feels over is a chemistry mistake. Cover a pool while the water is still warm and you've built an incubator: weeks of 70-degree water, no circulation, no sunlight, and a fading dose of sanitizer. The standard advice holds for fiberglass, wait until the water stays reliably below about 60°F before the cover goes on.
What we see in spring: the swamp opening. Green water, algae bonded to the steps and floor, and an aggressive shock-and-scrub recovery that's harder on a gel coat surface than a whole normal season of use. Patience in October saves the surface in April.
Mistake 7: Misusing Pool Antifreeze
Antifreeze confusion runs both directions. Some owners pour automotive antifreeze into their lines, a toxic mistake that contaminates the plumbing and eventually the pool. Others treat pool antifreeze as a substitute for blowing out the lines, filling pipes that still hold water and diluting the antifreeze until it can freeze anyway. Pool-grade antifreeze is insurance for lines that can't be fully cleared, added after a proper blow-out, never instead of one.
What we see in spring: split lines that were "protected" by diluted antifreeze, and contaminated plumbing runs that need flushing before the pool is safe to swim. If any step of the closing deserves a professional, it's the blow-out, it's where the expensive failures live.

What is the worst winterization mistake for a fiberglass pool?

Can ice really crack a fiberglass pool?

While the water is still warm. Covering a pool above roughly 60°F traps warm, unsanitized, uncirculated water for weeks, ideal algae conditions. Wait until water temperatures hold below about 60°F, even if that pushes closing into late October.
