Fiberglass Pool Maintenance: The Definitive Owner's Guide
Fiberglass is the lowest-maintenance pool surface made, if you treat it like fiberglass. This guide covers the weekly, monthly, and seasonal routine, the chemistry that protects your gel coat, and the habits that quietly destroy it.
Fiberglass pool maintenance comes down to three things: keep the water balanced (pH 7.2-7.6 is the big one), clean the surface with soft tools only, and never drain the pool yourself. Do those consistently and a factory gel coat surface can protect your shell for 15-25 years.
Why Fiberglass Is the Lowest-Maintenance Pool Surface
A fiberglass pool's gel coat is smooth and non-porous. That one property does a lot of work for you. Algae has almost nothing to grip, so it struggles to take hold the way it does in the pores of concrete plaster. The surface doesn't leach minerals into the water and constantly fight your pH the way fresh plaster does. And there's no vinyl liner to wrinkle, fade, or tear.
The practical result: fiberglass owners typically use less chlorine, brush less often, and spend less time chasing chemistry than concrete pool owners. But "low maintenance" is not "no maintenance." The gel coat is the shell's only armor against water and sun. The Monthly Routine
- Test calcium hardness and stabilizer (CYA). These drift slowly, so monthly is enough. Low calcium water is hungry water, it pulls minerals from whatever it touches, gel coat included.
- Clean the waterline. Body oils and sunscreen build a scum ring at the waterline. A melamine sponge ("magic eraser") or a gentle, pool-safe cleaner takes it off. No scouring powder, ever.
- Check the filter pressure. Backwash or clean the cartridge when pressure runs 8-10 psi over its clean baseline.
- If you run a salt system, inspect the cell for scale buildup per the manufacturer's schedule.
The Seasonal Routine
- Spring opening: balance the water fully before heavy swimming season, pH, alkalinity, calcium, stabilizer, sanitizer, in that order of attention. Deep-clean the filter.
- Mid-season: after heavy rain or a big swim weekend, re-test. Rain dilutes; swimmers add contaminants.

- Pouring undissolved chemicals in. Granular shock or acid sitting on the floor can bleach or etch a spot permanently. Pre-dissolve granulars; add acid slowly at the deep end with the pump running.

How often should I brush a fiberglass pool?
Once a week is plenty, and lightly, you're wiping away biofilm, not scrubbing plaster. Always use a soft nylon brush. Stiff bristle, stainless, or wire brushes will scratch the gel coat and are never appropriate on fiberglass.
Can I use an automatic pool cleaner on fiberglass?
Yes. Robotic and suction cleaners designed for fiberglass or vinyl surfaces work well. Just confirm the model uses soft brushes or rollers rather than aggressive scrubbing attachments meant for concrete.
Do fiberglass pools need less chlorine than concrete pools?

Can I acid wash a fiberglass pool?
