ecoFINISH vs Gel Coat: An Honest Comparison for Fiberglass Pool Owners

ecoFINISH is the company; aquaBRIGHT is its flagship pool coating. It's a polymer powder applied with a flame-spray gun: the applicator heats the surface, melts the thermoplastic powder in a flame, and fuses it onto the pool in a thin, continuous layer. When done well, it cures essentially instantly, no multi-day chemical cure, and produces a uniform, slightly textured matte finish.

It's the same general technology family used for industrial pipeline and marine coatings, and it was a genuinely clever answer to a real problem: giving concrete, plaster, and steel pools a long-life alternative to paint and plaster cycles.

Where aquaBRIGHT Is Genuinely Strong

Fair is fair. aquaBRIGHT's real advantages:

• Chemical tolerance. Thermoplastics are largely inert. aquaBRIGHT shrugs off chemistry swings that would etch plaster and accelerate oxidation in lesser surfaces.
• Fast return to service. Flame-applied material is solid as soon as it cools. No waiting on a chemical cure before refilling.
• Works over multiple substrates. Concrete, plaster, steel, and fiberglass. For a gunite pool owner tired of replastering, it's a legitimately good option.
• No VOC-heavy solvents. Powder plus flame, not resin plus catalyst.
• Long claimed service life. Far beyond epoxy paint's 2-4 year cycle when properly applied.

The Case for Gel Coat on a Fiberglass Shell

1. Material match

Your fiberglass pool is a polyester laminate that was born with a gel coat skin. When we resurface with marine-grade gel coat, the new surface cross-links with the shell, chemically the same family of material, expanding and flexing as one structure. aquaBRIGHT, however good, is a dissimilar material bonded onto the shell. It's engineered to handle that, but a bonded dissimilar layer is a different thing than a continuous like-for-like surface, especially on a shell that flexes the way fiberglass does.

2. Repairability

This is the practical difference owners feel years later. Gel coat is endlessly repairable with more gel coat: a scratch, a chip, a future crack repair, or a blister repair gets patched, blended, and polished into the surrounding surface. Repairing a thermoplastic coating means flame equipment and an applicator certified in that system, a much shorter list of people, and spot repairs in any coating system are harder to blend invisibly. When a gel-coated pool needs work in year 12, any competent fiberglass shop can do it.

3. Finish

aquaBRIGHT cures to a matte, lightly textured finish, some owners like it, and it's honest to say so. Gel coat cures to the glossy, glass-smooth surface fiberglass pools are famous for: easier to keep clean, harder for algae to grip, and it looks like the pool did on day one. If you bought a fiberglass pool partly for that gleam, only gel coat gives it back.

4. It's what the factory would do

No fiberglass pool manufacturer builds shells with a thermoplastic surface. They build them with gel coat, because it's the proven skin for a polyester laminate. Restoration, in our view, means returning the pool to factory condition, not converting it to a different surface system.

Pricing for both systems varies too much by pool size, condition, and region to quote honestly on a page, and any repairs the shell needs come first under either coating, so the prep bill is often similar. Neither product forgives amateurs. aquaBRIGHT depends on precise substrate temperature and applicator technique, too cool and it won't fuse, too hot and you can damage the substrate, which matters on a heat-sensitive fiberglass laminate. Gel coat depends on correct profiling, catalyst ratio, film thickness, and cure conditions, the reason it's a fabrication trade, not a painting trade. Whichever direction an owner goes, the applicator's track record matters more than the brochure.
